Buy better meat in 2012!

Many of us are eating too much meat, and we are buying most of this meat from the supermarkets. There's nothing inherently wrong with meat that comes from supermarkets - if you choose organic and free-range meats. But the intensively reared meat industry is bad for the environment - and I would argue that the meat is bad for your health too...

However when you buy meat from a specialist, small producer who really cares about how the animal was reared and slaughtered, you are getting a superior, healthier product that you will enjoy more, and also you are helping that producer to prosper, which has positive implications for the community and in many cases the environment.

How about deciding in 2012 to buy less meat from supermarkets - or even stop buying meat from supermarkets altogether? Instead you could shop at your local high street butchers (still ask where the meat comes from to be sure), or come to Good Food Pages to find great organic and free-range meat producers throughout the UK, many of whom offer mail order.

Better meat might cost more, but if you eat less meat, but choose better quality producers, then everyone will win. Remember cheap cuts are often the tastiest... pork belly, shoulder of lamb, offal - some of my favourite dishes are made from these!

Happy eating!
